OK, since I last posted on here, Man United have been crowned Premiership champions for the 9th time, Liverpool have reached the final of the Champions League once again and West Ham are currently performing miracles at the bottom of the league thanks mainly to one Carlos Tevez.
One thing which has obviously got my attention recently was some of the credit which has gone to the Glazer family for Manchester United's title success this season. This is something I feel very strongly about, having backed Shareholders United (now the Manchester United Supporter's Trust), pledging money to the cause in the process.
David Gill has been the main culprit. The comparison's with him and our previous Chief Executive, Peter Kenyon have been all too clear over the past two years. After all, he claimed he was opposed to the takeover back in April 2005 when he said: "The Glazers' financing plans proposed "more leverage [debt] than the board would consider prudent" and were liable to put "significant financial strain on the business."
Two years on and obviously more than content with being on the Glazer's payroll, his shift in attitude could not be have been more blatant, effectively sucking up to the Americans. If he'd kept quiet there's no doubt the United fans would have turned a blind eye and just accepted Gill for what he really is, a man only interested in his own personal profit like every other senior board member at the club.
However, keeping quiet was too much of an ask for him, claiming that the Glazers effectively aided the title push. In an interview to BBC Five Live, Gill said: "All the doomsayers who said we would be in trouble have been proved wrong." This was never looked at in the short-term, nobody has yet to have proven wrong nor right over this takeover. The fact remains that Manchester United are still in astronomical sums of debt, with more and more interest being added on a daily basis. In order to finally clear it, the club is looking having to win more domestic trophy's and more importantly, European Competition.
United have only won the European Cup twice in their history. Infact, they've only reached the final twice in their history. More worryingly, is that the last good away performance the club had in Europe was probably four years ago against Juventus. As we saw once again last week, as the team were embarrassingly put to the sword by Milan at the San Siro.
All the credit for United's success should go down to Ferguson, the back-room staff and the players and nobody else. The fans obviously play their part too, but nobody else should take an ounce of credit from this title winning season, especially the Glazers or David Gill.
Some people have said that Glazer has delivered when it comes to bringing in new players. Well, considering he promised £25m per season on new signings, you can't really blame United fans for feeling slightly short-changed. Carrick, Vidic, Evra and Park have all been good signings, but there have been many sacrifices to make sure these signings were possible including the sackings of many back-room staff, some employees who had been with the club for years, just told to up and leave to slash the club's wage-bill. It's a shame these things rarely get reported in the press.
It would be easy for this to put a sour taste in the mouths of many United fans after achieving something so brilliant. It's a credit to the players and the management (possibly even a miracle) that the team has won the league under the ownership of the Glazers'.
